About

A home shaped by the sea, craftsmanship, and warmth
Valberg Gjestegård is rooted in a tradition that spans several generations. What was once the home of fisherman and farmer Ragnar Larsen and his wife Ingeborg was a place where daily life was shaped by the sea, the surrounding nature, and a strong sense of family unity.
When Ragnar took over the farm from his father, he was determined to build something that could sustain the family for the future. The barn came first, and while the new main house was under construction, Ragnar and Ingeborg purchased the village’s old shooting lodge—a small timber building once used by the local rifle association as a gathering and practice space. This became their temporary home for several years, and it was here that two of their three children were born.
While Ragnar spent long periods at sea, Ingeborg carried the responsibility for both the children and the farm. She had a deep passion for gardening and created a lush, colorful garden that became her pride and joy, filled with flowers gathered both locally and from other parts of the country. Their son Rolf built sturdy stone walls that still stand today as quiet testimony to the care and effort the family invested in the place.
In time, farming operations came to an end, and the property became a summer retreat for the children. Though the years left their mark on both house and garden, the atmosphere—the sense of calm, closeness, and history that accompanied the family through generations—remained.
Modern comfort with a historic soul
In 2019, new owners came to the farm: Anne Lise and Per. After more than three decades in the south, they returned to the village where they had grown up, carrying a dream of breathing new life into a place that had stood still for too long. The fields were overgrown, the buildings weathered, and the rooms waited for warmth and people once more. But they saw the possibilities—and they saw the history.
With Per’s craftsmanship and Anne Lise’s eye for design and reuse, they began restoring the farm with deep respect for what had been. Many of the original furnishings were preserved. The garden was once again lovingly tended, and Ingeborg’s vision of a living, blooming outdoor space was revived. The old shooting lodge, long used as storage and workshop, was carefully returned to what it once had been—a small, welcoming house for guests. In this way, Ragnar and Ingeborg’s legacy became a natural part of the future.
Today, Valberg Gjestegård is a quiet, personal, and tradition-rich place where guests experience Lofoten as only locals know it. Anne Lise and Per live on the property and are present, attentive hosts, always happy to share their best hiking suggestions, stories, hidden viewpoints, and local knowledge gathered over a lifetime in the north.
This is a place that has lived for a long time—and that continues to live. A place where old stories meet new ones, where the sense of calm is genuine, and where guests are welcomed into a tradition that is still being written.
